August 2021 Book Releases

It happened again. I researched the new book releases in August and my TBR grew tenfold. Oops.

I guess it’s not a bad thing for my reading list to continue expanding. Especially since I’ve been reading like a madwoman this year! I’m so excited about a lot of these new releases and it’s fun to see which ones end up becoming popular on bookstagram or booktok!

As always, this list could have been nearly endless, but I’ve narrowed it down to thirty books I know you’ll absolutely love. There’s a mix of genres throughout and I look forward to hearing which titles you plan to read when they’re released!

The Heart Principle (The Kiss Quotient #3) by Helen Hoang | August 31

A woman struggling with burnout learns to embrace the unexpectedβ€”and the man she enlists to help herβ€”in this heartfelt new romance by USA Today bestselling author Helen Hoang.

When violinist Anna Sun accidentally achieves career success with a viral YouTube video, she finds herself incapacitated and burned out from her attempts to replicate that moment. And when her longtime boyfriend announces he wants an open relationship before making a final commitment, a hurt and angry Anna decides that if he wants an open relationship, then she does, too. Translation: She’s going to embark on a string of one-night stands. The more unacceptable the men, the better.

That’s where tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep comes in. Their first attempt at a one-night stand fails, as does their second, and their third, because being with Quan is more than sexβ€”he accepts Anna on an unconditional level that she has just started to understand herself. However, when tragedy strikes Anna’s family she takes on a role that she is ill-suited for, until the burden of expectations threatens to destroy her. Anna and Quan have to fight for their chance at love, but to do that, they also have to fight for themselves.

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee | August 3

For fans of Wilder Girls and Ninth House comes a dark, twisty, atmospheric thriller about a boarding school haunted by its history of witchcraft and two girls dangerously close to digging up the past.

Felicity Morrow is back at Dalloway School.

Perched in the Catskill mountains, the centuries-old, ivy-covered campus was home until the tragic death of her girlfriend. Now, after a year away, she’s returned to graduate. She even has her old room in Godwin House, the exclusive dormitory rumored to be haunted by the spirits of five Dalloway studentsβ€”girls some say were witches. The Dalloway Five all died mysteriously, one after another, right on Godwin grounds.

Witchcraft is woven into Dalloway’s history. The school doesn’t talk about it, but the students do. In secret rooms and shadowy corners, girls convene. And before her girlfriend died, Felicity was drawn to the dark. She’s determined to leave that behind her now; all Felicity wants is to focus on her senior thesis and graduate. But it’s hard when Dalloway’s occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won’t let her forget.

It’s Ellis Haley’s first year at Dalloway, and she’s already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is a so-called β€œmethod writer.” She’s eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can’t shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity for help researching the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can’t say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource.

And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway–and in herself.

The People We Keep by Allison Larkin | August 3

The People We Keep is about a young songwriter longing to find a home in the world.

Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at Margo’s diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she β€œborrows” her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.

As April moves through the world, meeting people who feel like home, she chronicles her life in the songs she writes and discovers that where she came from doesn’t dictate who she has to be.

This lyrical, unflinching tale is for anyone who has ever yearned for the fierce power of found family or to grasp the profound beauty of choosing to belong.

The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams | August 3

An unforgettable and heartwarming debut about how a chance encounter with a list of library books helps forge an unlikely friendship between two very different people in a London suburb.

Widower Mukesh lives a quiet life in the London Borough of Ealing after losing his beloved wife. He shops every Wednesday, goes to Temple, and worries about his granddaughter, Priya, who hides in her room reading while he spends his evenings watching nature documentaries.

Aleisha is a bright but anxious teenager working at the local library for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s a list of novels that she’s never heard of before. Intrigued, and a little bored with her slow job at the checkout desk, she impulsively decides to read every book on the list, one after the other. As each story gives up its magic, the books transport Aleisha from the painful realities she’s facing at home.

When Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm granddaughter, Aleisha passes along the reading list…hoping that it will be a lifeline for him too. Slowly, the shared books create a connection between two lonely souls, as fiction helps them escape their grief and everyday troubles and find joy again.

Lonely librarian June Jones has never left the sleepy English village where she grew up. Shy and reclusive, the thirty-year-old would rather spend her time buried in books than venture out into the world. The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith | August 31

The Last Magician meets The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy in this thrilling and atmospheric historical fantasy following a young woman who discovers she has magical powers and is thrust into a battle between witches and wizards.

In 1911 New York City, seventeen-year-old Frances Hallowell spends her days as a seamstress, mourning the mysterious death of her brother months prior. Everything changes when she’s attacked and a man ends up dead at her feetβ€”her scissors in his neck, and she can’t explain how they got there.

Before she can be condemned as a murderess, two cape-wearing nurses arrive to inform her she is deathly ill and ordered to report to Haxahaven Sanitarium. But Frances finds Haxahaven isn’t a sanitarium at all: it’s a school for witches. Within Haxahaven’s glittering walls, Frances finds the sisterhood she craves, but the headmistress warns Frances that magic is dangerous. Frances has no interest in the small, safe magic of her school, and is instead enchanted by Finn, a boy with magic himself who appears in her dreams and tells her he can teach her all she’s been craving to learn, lessons that may bring her closer to discovering what truly happened to her brother.

Frances’s newfound power attracts the attention of the leader of an ancient order who yearns for magical control of Manhattan. And who will stop at nothing to have Frances by his side. Frances must ultimately choose what matters more, justice for her murdered brother and her growing feelings for Finn, or the safety of her city and fellow witches. What price would she pay for power, and what if the truth is more terrible than she ever imagined?

A Dance with the Fae Prince (Married to Magic #2) by Elise Kova | August 19

Cinderella meets The Cruel Prince in this stand-alone fantasy romance about a human girl and her marriage to the prince of the fae.

She knew her hand in marriage would be sold. She had no idea a fae prince was the buyer.

Katria swore she’d never fall in love. She’s seen what “love” means through the cruelty of her family. So when she’s married off to the mysterious Lord Fenwood for a handsome price, all Katria wants is a better life than the one she’s leaving. Feelings are off the table.

But her new husband makes not falling in love difficult.

As their attraction begins to grow, so too do the oddities within her new life: strange rules, screams in the night, and attacks by fae that Katria never thought were real. When she witnesses a ritual not meant for human eyes, Katria finds herself spirited away to the land of Midscape.

Surviving the fae wilds as a human is hard enough. Katria must survive as a human who accidently pilfered the magic of ancient kings – magic a bloodthirsty king is ready to kill her for in order to keep his stolen throne – and her new husband is the rightful heir in hiding.

The power to save the fae is in her hands. But who will save her from a love she vowed never to feel?

The Royals Next Door by Karina Halle | August 31

An ordinary summer goes royally awry when a prince and princess move next door, bringing their handsome bodyguard with them, from New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle.

Piper Evans: elementary school teacher by day–avid romance reader and anonymous podcaster by night. She lives a quiet, reclusive life, taking care of her mother, who struggles with mental illness, avoiding her regrettable ex, who bartends in town, and trying to make inroads in the tight-knit island community that still sees her, five years in, as an outsider.

And she’s happy with how things are–really–until British royals rent the property next to hers and their brooding bodyguard decides she’s a security threat. Piper quickly realizes that one person’s fairy tale is an ordinary woman’s nightmare as a media frenzy takes over the island and each run-in with Harrison Cole is hotter and more confusing than the last. But beneath Harrison’s no-nonsense exterior lies a soft heart, one that could tempt a woman who’s sworn off attachments into believing in white knights.

But when Piper finds herself smack in the middle of a royal scandal that rocks the island she’ll need more than Harrison’s strong arms to shield her–she’ll have to do a little rescuing herself. With careers, hearts, and friendships on the line, Piper and Harrison will have to decide what they’re willing to give up for a chance at their own happily ever after.

When Paheli escapes, she runs headlong into a boy with stars in his eyes. This boy, as battered as she is, tosses Paheli a box of stars before disappearing.

With the stars, Paheli gains access to the Between, a place of pure magic and mystery. Now, Paheli collects girls like herself and these Wild Ones use their magic to travel the world, helping the hopeless and saving others from the fates they suffered.

Then Paheli and the Wild Ones learn that the boy who gave them the stars, Taraana, is in danger. He’s on the run from powerful forces within the world of magic. But if Taraana is no longer safe and free, neither are the Wild Ones. And that…is a fate the Wild Ones refuse to accept. Ever again.

Wait for It by Jenn McKinlay | August 10

A woman looking for a new lease on life moves to Arizona where she rents a guest house on a gorgeous property with a mysterious owner–a man who teaches her about resilience, courage, and ultimately true love, in this funny, bighearted novel about hope and healing from New York Times bestselling author Jenn McKinlay.

Stuck in a dreary Boston winter, Annabelle Martin would like nothing more than to run away from her current life. She’s not even thirty years old, twice-divorced, and has just dodged a marriage proposal… from her ex-husband. When she’s offered her dream job as creative director at a cutting-edge graphic design studio in Phoenix, she jumps at the opportunity to start over.

When she arrives in the Valley of the Sun, Annabelle is instantly intrigued by her anonymous landlord. Based on the cranky, handwritten notes Nick Daire leaves her, she assumes he is an old, rich curmudgeon. Annabelle is shocked when she finally meets Nick and discovers that he’s her age and uses a wheelchair. Nick suffered from a stroke a year ago, and while there’s no physical reason for him not to recover, he is struggling to overcome the paralyzing fear that has kept him a prisoner in his own home.

Despite her promise to herself not to get involved, Annabelle finds herself irresistibly drawn to Nick. And soon she wonders if she and Nick might help each other find the courage to embrace life, happiness, and true love.

All Are Welcome by Liz Parker | August 1

A darkly funny novel from a fresh new voice in fiction about brides, lovers, friends, and family, and all the secrets that come with them.

Tiny McAllister never thought she’d get married. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she didn’t think girls from Connecticut married other girls. Yet here she is with Caroline, the love of her life, at their destination wedding on the Bermuda coast. In attendanceβ€”their respective families and a few choice friends. The conflict-phobic Tiny hopes for a beautiful weekend with her bride-to-be. But as the weekend unfolds, it starts to feel like there’s a skeleton in every closet of the resort.

From Tiny’s family members, who find the world is changing at an uncomfortable speed, to Caroline’s parents, who are engaged in conspiratorial whispers, to their friends, who packed secrets of their ownβ€”nobody seems entirely forthcoming. Not to mention the conspicuous no-show and a tempting visit from the past. What the celebration really needs now is a monsoon to help stir up all the long-held secrets, simmering discontent, and hidden agendas.

All Tiny wanted was to get married, but if she can make it through this squall of a wedding, she might just leave with more than a wife.

The Dating Dare (A Sweet Mess #3) by Jayci Lee | August 3

Jayci Lee, author of A Sweet Mess, returns with The Dating Dareβ€”her next witty, chemistry-filled romantic comedy.

Tara Park doesn’t do serious relationships. Neither does she hop into bed with virtual strangers. Especially when that particular stranger is her best friend’s new brother-in-law. It isn’t an easy decision, though. Seth Kim is temptation personified. His unreasonably handsome looks and charming personality makes him easy on the eyes and good for her ego.

When a friendly game of Truth or Dare leads to an uncomplicated four-date arrangement with Seth, Tara can’t say she minds. But their dates, while sweet and sexy, have a tendency to hit roadblocks. Thankfully, their non-dates and chance meetings get frequent and heated.

Seth is leaving for a new job in Paris in a month and a no-strings attached fling seemed like a nice little distraction for both… But soon Seth realizes that Tara Park doesn’t come in a β€œnice & little” package–she’s funny and bold, sweet and sexy, and everything he ever wanted and never expected to find. Neither of them are ready for something serious and both have past relationship baggage they’ve been ignoring, but with a shot at forever on the line will they follow their hearts and take a chance on happily-ever-after?

For the Love of Friends by Sara Goodman Confino | August 1

A sharp and hilariously relatable novel about the business of weddings, the toll they can take, and the lengths one exasperated bridesmaid will go to for the love of friends.

Lily Weiss is her mother’s worst nightmare: thirty-two and singleβ€”the horror! She’s also a talented writer but hides behind a boring job at a science foundation. To her friends, she’s reliable and selfless, which is how she winds up a bridesmaid in five weddings in six weeks. Anything for her three best friends and two (younger) siblings, right? Even if her own love life is…well, she’d rather not talk about it. To keep her sanity, Lily needs a safe place to vent.

And so her anonymous blog, Bridesmania, is born. The posts start pouring out of her: all the feels about mom-zillas, her vanishing bank balance, the wicked bridesmaids of the west, high-strung brides-to-be, body-shaming dress clerks, bachelorette parties, and Spanx for days, not to mention being deemed guardian of eighty-eight-year-old Granny (who enjoys morning mimosas in the nude) for her brother’s destination wedding.

So far the blog has stayed anonymous. But as everyone knows, few things online remain secret forever…

When all is said and done, can Lily help all five couples make it to happily ever after? And will her own happy ending be close behind?

History and the speculative collide with the modern world when a group of high school girls form a secret society after discovering they can communicate with boys from the past, in this powerful look at female desire, jealousy, and the shifting lines between friendship and rivalry.

After her life is upended by divorce and a cross-country move, 16-year-old Saskia Brown feels like an outsider at her new schoolβ€”not only is she a transplant, she’s biracial in a population of mostly white students. What are some of your favorite autumnal books? πŸ‚
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Happy first weekend of autumn 🍁 Who else is as thrilled as I am that the best season has officially arrived? 🀭
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
I spent the day baking pumpkin bread with my sister, reading The Brothers Hawthorne while sipping my (multiple) cups of coffee, and watching the blustery rainy weather πŸŽƒ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
To answer my own question, here are a few of my top cozy, autumn book recs:
β€’ The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin
β€’ All Souls by Deborah Harkness
β€’ Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
β€’ Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper
β€’ Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
β€’ Spells for Lost Things by Jenna Evans Welch
β€’ The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones
β€’ The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
β€’ The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Do you plan your reads around the seasons? 🍁
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
I don't pick up many spring or summer books (since I dislike those seasons), but I typically find myself reading more cozy or witchy novels during autumn! πŸ‚ Doing this helps me to fully embrace my favorite time of the year πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
It'll come as no surprise to you that, thanks to @steepedinlore, I've also been sipping on many mugs of tea while I dive into my autumnal reads πŸ«– Make sure you use my code ESPRESSO10 to get a discount on your seasonal tea purchase! 🀎

SURPRISE! I'm going to begin adding home content to this page and I'm incredibly excited about it πŸ₯³ I've been slowly but surely transforming my house into the cozy little cottage of my dreams and the first thing to get a rework was the gallery wall in my bedroom, thanks to @desenio πŸ–ΌοΈ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
I've been shopping from Desenio for YEARS now and very highly recommend their stunning art prints and frames, so of course, the opportunity to be a #DesenioPartner for this project was a dream come true πŸ™ŒπŸΌ In fact, I have gallery walls featuring their posters in three different rooms in my home--that's how much I love them 😍
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
You can read my full review of this company (from products to pricing to shipping, and more) at the link in my bio πŸ’» And between now and October 3, you can get 45% off your purchase from @desenio using the code ESPRESSOEDITION 🫢🏼

β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Truthfully, it doesn't matter how long you've followed me, you probably already know that I love all things Shadow and Bone 🫢🏼 I've been going through a Grishaverse reread this year and loving every second of it, but nothing will compare to those first three books! πŸ₯°
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
I was late to the game with this trilogy, reading it for the first time just a little before the show first premiered, but it quickly became a core part of my personality πŸ˜‰ Now, I own two signed copies of the first book (one is the special edition hardcover and one is the show tie-in) πŸ“– And no joke, 90% of my candles are related to the Grishaverse in some way (thank you @janzywaxco for providing the perfect scents for my many rereads and rewatches πŸ•―οΈ)

Hi friends--what have I missed? 🀎
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
All I'm hearing on repeat in my head is Jacob Black's ridiculous, "Where the hell have you been, loca?" πŸ˜† I missed you all SO MUCH this past month and a half 😭
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
So to answer the werewolf's question:
🫢🏼 I got to spend a week with one of my best buddies in Ohio and we made friendship blankets, got matching Gilmore Girls tattoos, went to high tea, watched a ton of Seinfeld, avoided a tornado, and shopped til we dropped (it was the best time)
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ“– @chronicacademia and I have been buddy-reading like our lives depend on it for quite some time, but actually meeting in person and being able to geek out over books together face-to-face was the absolute best
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ₯€ The chance to meet one of my favorite authors during the same trip? Couldn't pass that up! I attended the Foxglove book tour in Columbus for @authoradalyngrace and it was such a surreal experience
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸͺ΄ I've begun to work on some home projects--finally turning my cozy cottage into exactly that--and I'm loving every second of it! Very thankful for some incredible partnerships that will be coming to this page real soon
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ₯° I’ve spent so much quality time with my family, including celebrating my sister’s birthday with her making such precious memories. So grateful for my incredible tribe who have held me up and brought so much comfort lately.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ’” The life update that I posted on my stories on Sept 1 explained the hardest part of why I disappeared for so long. I know that there are great plans for my future even as I stumble my way through the now (if you missed it and are confused, feel free to DM me)
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
The Bone Houses is a cozy-creepy (aka, not scary, but just a little eerie, while also being totally cozy and atmospheric) fantasy with incredible disability rep and a truly creative story 🦴 If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it for your "spooky season" TBR πŸŽƒ

Do you prefer to savor one book for an extended pe Do you prefer to savor one book for an extended period of time, or do you tend to fly through your reads pretty quickly? ⏳
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Normally, I would say that I fly through books--inhaling them more than savoring them πŸ˜… But over the last week, I spent time buddy-reading The Fragile Threads of Power... and taking my time with it β˜•οΈ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
There was something really nice about slowing down and reading little bits at a time, then discussing them with my friend, then reading more, then theorizing about the plot, then reading a little more, etc. 🀎 It felt good to just appreciate the book rather than gobbling it up (though I know I'll go right back to that with whatever I read next πŸ˜†)
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
