The 22 Books I Enjoyed Reading the Most in 2022

While I read over 240 titles in 2022, there were 22 books that really stood out. I’m so happy to be sharing my annual favorites wrap-up!

Last January, I had a blast putting together my list of 21 favorites for 2021. I figured it would be just as fun to do something similar for 2022. Going back through all the books I read over the year and reading the reviews to determine which ones made the cut was more challenging than I expected, but I’m quite satisfied with my final decisions. These truly were the 22 books that I loved the very most in 2022.

Despite July being the most challenging and heartbreaking month of the entire year for me, it was also when I added the most books to my “top reads” list. It was also the month that gave me my favorite book of the year: Belladonna by Adalyn Grace. I look forward to seeing which books wind up on my favorites list in 2023!

The Guncle

Steven Rowley

Synopsis

From the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer.

Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is honestly a bit out of his league.

So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of β€œGuncle Rules” ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parentingβ€”even if temporaryβ€”isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

With the humor and heart we’ve come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

The Kindred

Alechia Dow

Synopsis

To save a galactic kingdom from revolution, Kindred mind-pairings were created to ensure each and every person would be seen and heard, no matter how rich or poor…

Joy Abara knows her place. A commoner from the lowly planet Hali, she lives a simple lifeβ€”apart from the notoriety that being Kindred to the nobility’s most infamous playboy brings.

Duke Felix Hamdi has a plan. He will exasperate his noble family to the point that they agree to let him choose his own future and finally meet his Kindred face-to-face.

Then the royal family is assassinated, putting Felix next in line for the throne…and accused of the murders. Someone will stop at nothing until he’s dead, which means they’ll target Joy, too. Meeting in person for the first time as they steal a spacecraft and flee amid chaos might not be ideal…and neither is crash-landing on the strange backward planet called Earth. But hiding might just be the perfect way to discover the true strength of the Kindred bond and expose a scandalβ€”and a loveβ€”that may decide the future of a galaxy.

Wind Daughter (Echo North #2)

Joanna Ruth Meyer

Synopsis

A hauntingly beautiful fairy tale about love and loss, this Echo North companion novel is perfect for fans of the Winternight Trilogy.

In the dark, cold reaches of the north lives a storyteller and his daughter. He told his daughter, Satu, many stories–romances like the girl who loved a star and changed herself into a nightingale so she could always see him shining–but the most important story he told her was his own. This storyteller was once the formidable North Wind, but he lost his power by trading it away in exchange for mortality–he loved her mother too much to live without her. The loss of his magic impacted more than just their family, however, and now the world is unraveling in the wake of this imbalance.

To save the North, Satu embarks on a perilous journey to reclaim her father’s magic, but she isn’t the only one searching for it. In the snow-laden mountains, she finds herself in a deadly race with the Winter Lord who wants the North Wind’s destructive powers for himself.

Satu has the chance to be the heroine of her own fairy tale, only this one has an ending she never could have imagined.

Defy the Night (Defy the Night #1)

Brigid Kemmerer

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer comes a blockbuster fantasy series about a kingdom divided by corruption, the prince desperately holding it together, and the girl who will risk everything to bring it crashing down.

The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand.
King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents’ shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King’s Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion–it’s the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere, and the only known cure, an elixir made from delicate Moonflower petals, is severely limited.

Out in the Wilds, apothecary apprentice Tessa Cade is tired of seeing her neighbors die, their suffering ignored by the unyielding royals. Every night, she and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most–but it’s still not enough.

As rumors spread that the cure no longer works and sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King’s Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible: sneaking into the palace. But what she finds upon her arrival makes her wonder if it’s even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first.

Set in a richly imaginative world with striking similarities to our own, Brigid Kemmerer’s captivating new series is about those with power and those without . . . and what happens when someone is brave enough to imagine a new future.

The Bone Houses

Emily Lloyd-Jones

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family, and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote Welsh village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to fae creatures known as the Otherfolk. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.

The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. Ryn has always been quick to deal with this inconvenience whenever they wander too close to her graveyard, but when Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with renewed purpose. What is it about Ellis that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they stop them for good?

Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a quest that will bring them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and long-hidden truths about themselves. Equal parts classic horror novel and original fairy-tale, The Bone Houses will have you spellbound from the very first page.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot #1)

Becky Chambers

Synopsis

In A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Hugo Award-winner Becky Chambers’s delightful new Monk and Robot series gives us hope for the future.

It’s been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.

One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of “what do people need?” is answered.

But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

They’re going to need to ask it a lot.

Becky Chambers’s new series asks: in a world where people have what they want, does having more matter?

Sorcery of Thorns (Sorcery of Thorns #1)

Margaret Rogerson

Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an “enthralling adventure” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery–magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire, and Elisabeth is implicated in the crime. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught–about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

Forging Silver Into Stars (Forging Silver Into Stars #1)

Brigid Kemmerer

Synopsis

When ancient magic tests a newfound love, a dark fate beckons . . .

Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now they’ve learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed Callyn’s parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Magic never helped Jax, whose leg was crushed in an accident that his father has been punishing him for ever since. Magic won’t save either of them when the tax collector comes calling, threatening to take their homes if they can’t pay what they owe.

Meanwhile, Jax and Callyn are astonished to learn magic has already returned to Syhl Shallowβ€”in the form of a magesmith who’s now married to their queen. Now, the people of Syhl Shallow are expected to allow dangerous magic in their midst, and no one is happy about it.

When a stranger rides into town offering Jax and Callyn silver in exchange for holding secret messages for an anti-magic faction, the choice is obviousβ€”even if it means they may be aiding in a plot to destroy their new king. It’s a risk they’re both willing to take. That is, until another visitor arrives: handsome Lord Tycho, the King’s Courier, the man who’s been tasked with discovering who’s conspiring against the throne.

Suddenly, Jax and Callyn find themselves embroiled in a world of shifting alliances, dangerous flirtations, and ancient magic . . . where even the deepest loyalties will be tested.

Thank You For Listening

Julia Whelan

Synopsis

From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan’s uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narratorβ€”who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accidentβ€”and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.

For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.

On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last bookβ€”with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are sellingβ€”not after her own dreams were tragically cut shortβ€”and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.

As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.

If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

Spells for Lost Things

Jenna Evans Welch

Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author of Love & Gelato comes a poignant and romantic novel about two teens trying to find their place in the world after being unceremoniously dragged to Salem, Massachusetts, for the summer.

Willow has never felt like she belonged anywhere and is convinced that the only way to find a true home is to travel the world. But her plans to act on her dream are put on hold when her aloof and often absent mother drags Willow to Salem, Massachusetts, to wrap up the affairs of an aunt Willow didn’t even know she had. He’s been classified as one of the runaways, constantly searching for ways to make it back to his mom; even if she can’t take care of him, it’s his job to try and take care of her. Isn’t it?

Naturally pulled to one another, Willow and Mason set out across Salem to discover the secret past of Willow’s mother, her aunt, and the ambiguous history of her family. During all of this, the two can’t help but act on their natural connection. But with the amount of baggage between themβ€”and Willow’s growing conviction her family might be cursedβ€”can they manage to hold onto each other?

Abby’s books – especially her most recent 3 (including her upcoming, Yours Truly) – are just phenomenal. She does an incredible job with representation of some very challenging mind and body struggles. Simultaneously, the romance is always stellar. So precious and swoony. I just love her stories!

It really is! I kind of surprised myself with that total haha! My goal was 120 but I just blew right past that before the year was even halfway over. It was so fun to see how much I could read. But this year I’m taking things a lot slower and not pushing myself so much. Different goals each year, ya know? I want to savor the stories, reread my favorites, and just relax into reading!

Hi friends--what have I missed? 🀎
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
All I'm hearing on repeat in my head is Jacob Black's ridiculous, "Where the hell have you been, loca?" πŸ˜† I missed you all SO MUCH this past month and a half 😭
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
So to answer the werewolf's question:
🫢🏼 I got to spend a week with one of my best buddies in Ohio and we made friendship blankets, got matching Gilmore Girls tattoos, went to high tea, watched a ton of Seinfeld, avoided a tornado, and shopped til we dropped (it was the best time)

πŸ“– @chronicacademia and I have been buddy-reading like our lives depend on it for quite some time, but actually meeting in person and being able to geek out over books together face-to-face was the absolute best
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ₯€ The chance to meet one of my favorite authors during the same trip? Couldn't pass that up! I attended the Foxglove book tour in Columbus for @authoradalyngrace and it was such a surreal experience
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸͺ΄ I've begun to work on some home projects--finally turning my cozy cottage into exactly that--and I'm loving every second of it! Very thankful for some incredible partnerships that will be coming to this page real soon
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ₯° I’ve spent so much quality time with my family, including celebrating my sister’s birthday with her making such precious memories. So grateful for my incredible tribe who have held me up and brought so much comfort lately.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ’” The life update that I posted on my stories on Sept 1 explained the hardest part of why I disappeared for so long. I know that there are great plans for my future even as I stumble my way through the now (if you missed it and are confused, feel free to DM me)

Now, tell me something that you're looking forward to this autumn πŸ‚

Okay, this wasn't the last one for me, but it was the FIRST book that @chronicacademia recommended to me… and it became an instant fave 😍
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
The Bone Houses is a cozy-creepy (aka, not scary, but just a little eerie, while also being totally cozy and atmospheric) fantasy with incredible disability rep and a truly creative story 🦴 If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it for your "spooky season" TBR πŸŽƒ

Do you prefer to savor one book for an extended pe Do you prefer to savor one book for an extended period of time, or do you tend to fly through your reads pretty quickly? ⏳
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Normally, I would say that I fly through books--inhaling them more than savoring them πŸ˜… But over the last week, I spent time buddy-reading The Fragile Threads of Power... and taking my time with it β˜•οΈ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
There was something really nice about slowing down and reading little bits at a time, then discussing them with my friend, then reading more, then theorizing about the plot, then reading a little more, etc. 🀎 It felt good to just appreciate the book rather than gobbling it up (though I know I'll go right back to that with whatever I read next πŸ˜†)
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
If you tend to fly through your reads, what's the last book that made you WANT to take your time with it and savor each moment? πŸ“–
