Shot Clock by @justinwritesya and Caron Butler (ARC) is a middle-grade novel all about heart, hope, and of course lots of great basketball πŸ€ This has been the perfect book to read while I watch the NBA conference finals β›ΉπŸΎ

We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story by @simuliu has been absolutely phenomenal 😍 I've been a huge fan of Simu for quite some time and learning more about his family, his life, and how he became Shang-Chi has been really incredible πŸ’₯ Plus, he narrates the audiobook 🎧

β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
A few that I love a little extra:
πŸƒ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

πŸ‘‘ A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown
βš“οΈ All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
And a couple with upcoming sequels I'm anticipating:
🐺 The Wilderwood by Hannah Whitten
🦒 Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Do you DNF books? πŸ™…πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
This has been such a controversial topic for so long and I've personally struggled with it A LOT πŸ™ˆ For years, I refused to quit reading a book unless the subject matter was too triggering or frightening for me to handle 🫣 I would even go so far as to read entire series that I literally didn't like, just to see if the books got any better and changed my mind 🧠
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
HOWEVER... this recently changed for me! πŸ™€ This month, I chose to put down four books that weren't serving me - and it was so insanely freeing! 🍾 I felt like a weight was lifted off me, not forcing myself to read things I wasn't into - and while I still might give some books the benefit of the doubt and finish them (some of my favorite books of all time started off with me feeling very so-so about them)... I will no longer be struggling my way through series I'm not enjoying or novels that make me feel uneasy πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

The last few books I read that 100% lived up to the hype were:
🐐 Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez (this book made me feel so seen it was unreal. I wept several times)
πŸͺ· Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer (I was so thrilled with how much I enjoyed this fantasy)
πŸ’„ The No-Show by Beth O'Leary (this author is usually a winner for me and her latest release didn't disappoint)
πŸ› The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake (I was unsure for the first 3rd of the book but it wound up being a 5-star read by the end!)

February 2021 Book Releases

all this time book open on top of a tan turtleneck sweater with donuts and coffee

Ah, the new month is here. These are the 30 book releases in February 2021 that you should know about!

Thinking I should pop champagne over the fact that I’m actually getting this post up at the beginning of February! I felt so bad about getting January’s new releases up super late in the month. I made it a priority to have the new releases you should be on the lookout for in February accessible much sooner.

I noticed a couple of themes this month: lots of contemporary fiction and yellow or gold covers. I was expecting tons of romance releases, considering it’s Love Month, but I guess that’s not the big deal this year (or maybe there’s awesome romance in some of these that I haven’t even discovered yet)! Either way, let’s get to the good stuff – all the great new book releases in February!

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she’s struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can’t seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre’s Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta’s orbit. But her temper isn’t the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other’s arms.

Impossible though it seems, he’s been hit into another dimensionβ€”and keeps on bouncing through worlds that are almost-but-not-really his own.

The changes start small, but they quickly spiral out of control as Ash slides into universes where he has everything he’s ever wanted, universes where society is stuck in the past…universes where he finds himself looking at life through entirely different eyes.

And if he isn’t careful, the world he’s learning to see more clearly could blink out of existence…

From the award-winning Southern writer who Roxane Gay calls “a consummate storyteller” comes a cathartic novel about the life-changing weekend shared between two strangers: a therapist and the man she prevents from ending his life.

On a rainy October night in Kentucky, recently divorced therapist Tallie Clark is on her way home from work when she spots a man precariously standing on the side of a bridge. Without a second thought, Tallie pulls over and jumps out of the car into the pouring rain. She convinces the man to join her for a cup of coffee, and he eventually agrees to come back to her house, where he finally shares his name: Emmett.

Over the course of the emotionally charged weekend that follows, Tallie makes it her mission to provide a safe space for Emmett, though she hesitates to confess that this is also her day job. But what she doesn’t realize is that he’s not the only one who needs healing — and she’s not the only one with secrets.

Alternating between Tallie and Emmett’s perspectives as they inch closer to the truth of what brought Emmett to the bridge’s edge — as well as the hard truths Tallie has been grappling with in her own life — This Close to Okay is a vibrant, powerful story of two strangers brought together by wild chance at the moment they needed each other most.

A Pho Love Story by Loan Le

When Dimple Met Rishi meets Ugly Delicious in this funny, smart romantic comedy, in which two Vietnamese-American teens fall in love and must navigate their newfound relationship amid their families’ age-old feud about their competing, neighboring restaurants.

If Bao Nguyen had to describe himself, he’d say he was a rock. Steady and strong, but not particularly interesting. His grades are average, his social status unremarkable. He works at his parents’ pho restaurant, and even there, he is his parents’ fifth favorite employee. Not ideal.

If Linh Mai had to describe herself, she’d say she was a firecracker. Stable when unlit, but full of potential for joy and fire. She loves art and dreams pursuing a career in it. The only problem? Her parents rely on her in ways they’re not willing to admit, including working practically full-time at her family’s pho restaurant.

For years, the Mais and the Nguyens have been at odds, having owned competing, neighboring pho restaurants. Bao and Linh, who’ve avoided each other for most of their lives, both suspect that the feud stems from feelings much deeper than friendly competition.

But then a chance encounter brings Linh and Bao in the same vicinity despite their best efforts and sparks fly, leading them both to wonder what took so long for them to connect. But then, of course, they immediately remember.

Can Linh and Bao find love in the midst of feuding families and complicated histories?

An Uplifting and Unforgettable Story of Love and Second Chances

A sparkling and tender novel from the acclaimed author of Love Lettering, full of bickering neighbors, surprise reunions, and the mysterious power of love that fans of Christina Lauren, Sarah Hogle, and Emily Henry will adore.

Sixteen years ago, a teenaged Will Sterling sawβ€”or rather, heardβ€”the girl of his dreams. Standing beneath an apartment building balcony, he shared a perfect moment with a lovely, warm-voiced stranger. It’s a memory that’s never faded, though he’s put so much of his past behind him. Now an unexpected inheritance has brought Will back to that same address, where he plans to offload his new property and get back to his regular life as an overworked doctor. Instead, he encounters a woman, two balconies above, who’s uncannily familiar . . .

No matter how surprised Nora Clarke is by her reaction to handsome, curious Will, or the whispered pre-dawn conversations they share, she won’t let his plans ruin her quirky, close-knit building. Bound by her loyalty to her adored grandmother, she sets out to foil his efforts with a little light sabotage. But beneath the surface of their feud is an undeniable connection. A balcony, a star-crossed couple, a fateful meetingβ€”maybe it’s the kind of story that can’t work out in the end. Or maybe, it’s the perfect second chance . . .

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers

A refreshingly timely and relatable debut novel about a young woman whose life plans fall apart when she meets her wife.

With her newly completed PhD in astronomy in hand, twenty-eight-year-old Grace Porter goes on a girls’ trip to Vegas to celebrate. She’s a straight A, work-through-the-summer certified high achiever. She is not the kind of person who goes to Vegas and gets drunkenly married to a woman whose name she doesn’t know…until she does exactly that.

This one moment of departure from her stern ex-military father’s plans for her life has Grace wondering why she doesn’t feel more fulfilled from completing her degree. Staggering under the weight of her father’s expectations, a struggling job market and feelings of burnout, Grace flees her home in Portland for a summer in New York with the wife she barely knows.

In New York, she’s able to ignore all the annoying questions about her future plans and falls hard for her creative and beautiful wife, Yuki Yamamoto. But when reality comes crashing in, Grace must face what she’s been running from all alongβ€”the fears that make us human, the family scars that need to heal and the longing for connection, especially when navigating the messiness of adulthood.

From New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Rene Watson comes a new YA–a love story about not only a romantic relationship but how a girl finds herself and falls in love with who she really is.

When Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani’s birthday, she finds herself falling in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC. He’s perfect, except . . . Tye is an activist and is spending the summer putting on events for the community when Nala would rather watch movies and try out the new seasonal flavors at the local creamery. In order to impress Tye, Nala tells a few tiny lies to have enough in common with him. As they spend more time together, sharing more of themselves, some of those lies get harder to keep up. As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she’ll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary.

Rise of the Red Hand (The Mechanists #1) by Olivia Chadha

A rare, searing portrayal of the future of climate change in South Asia. A streetrat turned revolutionary and the disillusioned hacker son of a politician try to take down a ruthlessly technocratic government that sacrifices its poorest citizens to build its utopia.

The South Asian Province is split in two. Uplanders lead luxurious lives inside a climate-controlled biodome, dependent on technology and gene therapy to keep them healthy and youthful forever. Outside, the poor and forgotten scrape by with discarded black-market robotics, a society of poverty-stricken cyborgs struggling to survive in slums threatened by rising sea levels, unbreathable air, and deadly superbugs.

Ashiva works for the Red Hand, an underground network of revolutionaries fighting the government, which is run by a merciless computer algorithm that dictates every citizen’s fate. She’s a smuggler with the best robotic arm and cybernetic enhancements the slums can offer, and her cargo includes the most vulnerable of the city’s abandoned children.

When Ashiva crosses paths with the brilliant hacker Riz-Ali, a privileged Uplander who finds himself embroiled in the Red Hand’s dangerous activities, they uncover a horrifying conspiracy that the government will do anything to bury. From armed guardians kidnapping children to massive robots flattening the slums, to a pandemic that threatens to sweep through the city like wildfire, Ashiva and Riz-Ali will have to put aside their differences in order to fight the system and save the communities they love from destruction.

The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology.

Angrboda’s story begins where most witches’ tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who Angrboda is keen to raise at the edge of the world, safely hidden from Odin’s all-seeing eye. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful lifeβ€”and possibly all of existenceβ€”is in danger.

With help from the fierce huntress Skadi, with whom she shares a growing bond, Angrboda must choose whether she’ll accept the fate that she’s foreseen for her beloved family…or rise to remake their future. From the most ancient of tales this novel forges a story of love, loss, and hope for the modern age.

Make Up Break Up by Lily Menon, Sandhya Menon

Love, romance, second chances, fairy-tale endings…these are the things Annika Dev believes in. Her app, Make Up, has been called the β€œGoogle Translate for failing relationships.”

High efficiency break-ups, flashy start-ups, penthouses, fast cars…these are the things Hudson Craft believes in. His app, Break Up, is known as the β€œUber for break-ups.” It’s wildly successfulβ€”and anathema to Annika’s life philosophy.

Which wouldn’t be a problem if they’d gone their separate ways after that summer fling in Las Vegas, never to see each other again. Unfortunately for Annika, Hudson’s moving not just into her office building, but into the office right next to hers. And he’ll be competing at the prestigious EPIC investment pitch contest: A contest Annika needs to win if she wants to keep Make Up afloat. As if it’s not bad enough seeing his irritatingly perfect face on magazine covers when her own business is failing. As if knowing he stole her idea and twisted it into something vileβ€”and monumentally more successfulβ€”didn’t already make her stomach churn.

As the two rival app developers clash again and againβ€”and againβ€”Annika finds herself drawn into Hudson Craft’s fast-paced, high velocity, utterly shallow world. Only, from up close, he doesn’t seem all that shallow. Could it be that everything she thought about Hudson is completely wrong? Could the creator of Break Up teach her what true love’s really about?

The Hazel Wood meets The Astonishing Color of After in this dreamy, atmospheric novel that follows sixteen-year-old Eli as she tries to remember what truly happened the night her mother disappeared off a glacier in Norway under the Northern Lights.

Never whistle at the Northern Lights, the story goes, or they’ll sweep down from the sky and carry you away.

Sixteen-year-old Eline Davis knows it’s true. She was there ten years ago, on a frozen fjord in Svalbard, Norway, the night her mother whistled at the lights and then vanished.

Now Eli lives an ordinary life with her dad on Cape Cod. But when the Northern Lights are visible over the Cape for just one night, she can’t resist the possibility of seeing her mother again. So she whistlesβ€”and it works. Her mother appears, with snowy hair, frosty fingertips and a hazy story of where she’s been all these years. And she doesn’t return alone.

Along with Eli’s mother’s reappearance come strange, impossible things. Narwhals swimming in Cape Cod Bay, meteorites landing in Eli’s yard, and three shadowy princesses with ominous messages. It’s all too much, too fast, and Eli pushes her mother away. She disappears againβ€”but this time, she leaves behind a note that will send Eli on a journey across continents, to the northern tip of the world:

What Doesn’t Kill You: A Life with Chronic Illness – Lessons from a Body in Revolt by Tessa Miller

The riveting account of a young journalist’s awakening to chronic illness, weaving together personal story and reporting to shed light on living with an ailment forever.

Tessa Miller was an ambitious twentysomething writer in New York City when, on a random fall day, her stomach began to seize up. At first, she toughed it out through searing pain, taking sick days from work, unable to leave the bathroom or her bed. But when it became undeniable that something was seriously wrong, Miller gave in to family pressure and went to the hospitalβ€”beginning a yearslong nightmare of procedures, misdiagnoses, and life-threatening infections. Once she was finally correctly diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, Miller faced another battle: accepting that she will never get better.

Today, an astonishing three in five adults in the United States suffer from a chronic diseaseβ€”a percentage expected to rise post-Covid. Whether the illness is arthritis, asthma, Crohn’s, diabetes, endometriosis, multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, or any other incurable illness, and whether the sufferer is a colleague, a loved one, or you, these diseases have an impact on just about every one of us. Yet there remains an air of shame and isolation about the topic of chronic sickness. Millions must endure these disorders not only physically but also emotionally, balancing the stress of relationships and work amid the ever-present threat of health complications.

Miller segues seamlessly from her dramatic personal experiences into a frank look at the cultural realities (medical, occupational, social) inherent in receiving a lifetime diagnosis. She offers hard-earned wisdom, solidarity, and an ultimately surprising promise of joy for those trying to make sense of it all.

I will no longer be struggling my way through series I'm not enjoying or novels that make me feel uneasy πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Have you ever almost DNF'd a book that you wound up loving? 🀎 Which was it? πŸ“–

β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
The last few books I read that 100% lived up to the hype were:
🐐 Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez (this book made me feel so seen it was unreal. I wept several times)
πŸͺ· Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer (I was so thrilled with how much I enjoyed this fantasy)
πŸ’„ The No-Show by Beth O'Leary (this author is usually a winner for me and her latest release didn't disappoint)

Did you know that May is Mental Health Month? πŸ’š As someone who has battled with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder for a great deal of my life, well written mental health rep in books is so important to me! πŸ“– It's always so encouraging to pick up a novel and feel truly seen while turning the pages πŸ‘€

A few books that have really stood out to me because of their mental health rep are:
β€’ The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (this book quite literally changed my life and it's still one that I turn to whenever I'm struggling)
β€’ The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab
β€’ A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown
β€’ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman (this is another comfort book for me because I've never found another character quite as much like me as Nina)
β€’ Amelia Unabridged by Ashley Schumacher
β€’ Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
β€’ The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow
β€’ This Might Get Awkward by Kara McDowell (this author knows how to write about anxiety in a way that's more relatable than I've seen in nearly any other book)
β€’ It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini (this book got me through high school - in more ways than one)
