A lot of people only think of their bedroom as a place to sleep at night. When we moved into our new home, I knew I wanted to turn my master bedroom into an oasis. Now this suite is my favorite spot in the house!
The master bedroom layout in our new home is bizarre. The windows are off-center, the space where the bed should be isn’t really conducive for a bed, there’s a strange little nook by the entrance, and the bathroom juts out into the room. It’s just plain weird. Making my vision for the space come to life was quite a challenge, but once accomplished, it really created a bedroom suite that I love with my whole heart!
I’ve never had an experience quite like this. The room, despite its odd layout, felt relatively spacious when I first saw it, but after adding the furniture it actually seemed bigger! So, if you’re looking to make your master bedroom appear larger without knocking down walls, hopefully, this post will inspire you.
Here’s what it looked like before I painted and decorated.
The walls were a greenish-yellow beige (that reflected all the greenery outside the windows) with a dark, putrid yellow trim.
Now that you’ve seen that, you might appreciate the final look even more!
I saw the idea for the wall of curtains on Pinterest and ran with it. I knew that was the best way to cover the “his and hers” closets without keeping doors on the frames. It’s such a silly design for a room because if we turned the bed sideways, it would be too long (since the shape is rectangular), but keeping it facing forward didn’t allow for the closet doors to function properly. Adding the wall of curtains not only provided a practical solution, but it wound up making the ceilings appear higher and the space look bigger!
In order to really make this master bedroom a “suite,” we added a sitting area. The little corner by the front door just begged for an armchair. I put my faux fiddle-leaf fig next to that and faced everything towards the TV. You’ll find me curled up here nearly every evening either reading or catching up on my favorite shows. I also love that it brought that entire space together and made it feel less empty!
Originally, I was going to place my standing closet rack in my office as I had in the apartment, but after bringing the large mirror into our bedroom, I knew I wanted to tie that space together. It makes the room feel more like a bedroom to me, having the “getting ready” area in it. This is something I haven’t done for years since I perpetually had some form of a “cloffice” (a closet and office space combined)!
The curtain wall, sitting nook, and outfit-check area really brought the entire space together and made it feel like a true master bedroom suite. We get the most gorgeous sunshine in this room to wake us up during the morning and it’s especially peaceful in the evening when I’m ready to wind down. Eventually, we’d like to swap the TV stand for a dresser and add bamboo blinds, along with maybe one day putting our bed in a frame (oops) – but for now, this room is absolutely wonderful as it is!
I’m loving your style, especially the curtains, mirror and the arrangements of picture frames in the corner.
Thanks for sharing.

I love before and after photos! You did such a wonderful job transforming your master bedroom. I agree that your bedroom is more than just a place to sleep, it should definitely feel like an oasis! I’m obsessed with the gold curtain rod, it’s such a nice touch and matches perfectly with your table lamps! I really like the nook area, it looks like the perfect place to enjoy a good book. You did a fantastic job!
“Putrid yellow” could not be a more apt description of the original color. I am dying over here just looking at it, but am refreshed and amazed to see what you transformed the room into! The closet curtain solution is genius, and I love that fit in an armchair and standing closet rack. The corner with the mirror is definitely my favorite nook.
Thanks for sharing!
I love how you’ve configured and decorated your master bedroom. I love that chair nook and would love to have one in my own master! Thanks for sharing.
So LOVELY! What a great makeover, Steph! I absolutely love this new look, so cozy and dreamy 🙂
Wow, what a transformation! It’s so impressive that you were able to have this vision of how you wanted the room to look when it was in it’s original state. Needless to say, you did a beautiful job and the room looks so peaceful and chic. I definitely want to invest in a clothing rack like the one you have pictured when I move into a bigger space next year. Thank you for sharing!
