A few that I love a little extra:

βš“οΈ All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace

🐺 The Wilderwood by Hannah Whitten
🦒 Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Do you DNF books? πŸ™…πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
This has been such a controversial topic for so long and I've personally struggled with it A LOT πŸ™ˆ For years, I refused to quit reading a book unless the subject matter was too triggering or frightening for me to handle 🫣 I would even go so far as to read entire series that I literally didn't like, just to see if the books got any better and changed my mind 🧠
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
HOWEVER... this recently changed for me! πŸ™€ This month, I chose to put down four books that weren't serving me - and it was so insanely freeing! 🍾 I felt like a weight was lifted off me, not forcing myself to read things I wasn't into - and while I still might give some books the benefit of the doubt and finish them (some of my favorite books of all time started off with me feeling very so-so about them)... I will no longer be struggling my way through series I'm not enjoying or novels that make me feel uneasy πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

πŸͺ· Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer (I was so thrilled with how much I enjoyed this fantasy)
πŸ’„ The No-Show by Beth O'Leary (this author is usually a winner for me and her latest release didn't disappoint)

March 2022 Reading Wrap-Up

It was a wild reading month, folks! In this post I’ll be going over the 22 books I read in March 2022 and what I thought about them all.

On the 24th of the month, I gasped at my reading stats on The StoryGraph! I couldn’t believe that I had already picked up 19 books – and was in the middle of 4 more. This month flew by, and so did all of the books I read, clearly. I went into March with the intention of reading 15 books and wound up adding quite a few more to the list as time went on.

It was so exciting to read one of my most anticipated releases for the year, along with a handful of buddy-reads, finishing up a few series, and starting several more that I had on my 2022 reading list! Shall we dive into the ratings and reviews?

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent (Divergent #1) | reread

by Veronica Roth

Book Synopsis

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtueβ€”Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really isβ€”she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really areβ€”and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the YA scene with the first book in the Divergent seriesβ€”dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

by V.E. Schwab

This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity #1)

by Victoria Schwab

Book Synopsis

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains–and friends or enemies–with the future of their home at stake.

The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city–a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent–but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side–including the monsters within.

However, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true: she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, she reluctantly accepts. The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials #1)

by Philip Pullman

Book Synopsis

The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an “All-Time Greatest Novel” and Newsweek hailed as a “Top 100 Book of All Time.” Philip Pullman takes readers to a world where humans have animal familiars and where parallel universes are within reach.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal–including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

But what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other…A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman’s award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which continues with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

Call Down the Hawk (The Dreamer Trilogy #1)

by Maggie Stiefvater

Book Synopsis

The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop dreaming – they can only try to control it. Those who are dreamed cannot have their own lives – they will sleep forever if their dreamers die.

And then there are those who are drawn to the dreamers. To use them. To trap them. To kill them before their dreams destroy us all.

Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality.

Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it.

Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer . . . and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed. . . .

We Free the Stars (Sands of Arawiya #2)

by Hafsah Faizal

Book Synopsis

The second book in the Sands of Arawiya duology by the masterful Hafsah Faizal–the follow-up to the smash New York Times bestselling novel We Hunt the Flame.

Darkness surged in his veins. Power bled from her bones.

The battle on Sharr is over. The Arz has fallen. Altair may be captive, but Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are bound for Sultan’s Keep, determined to finish the plan Altair set in motion: restoring the hearts of the Sisters of Old to the minarets of each caliphate, finally bringing magic to all of Arawiya. But they are low on resources and allies alike, and the kingdom teems with fear of the Lion of the Night’s return.

As the zumra plots to overthrow Arawiya’s darkest threat, Nasir fights to command the magic in his blood. He must learn to hone his power, to wield it against not only the Lion but his father as well, trapped under the Lion’s control. Zafira battles a very different darkness festering in her through her bond with the Jawarat–it hums with voices, pushing her to the brink of sanity and to the edge of a chaos she dares not unleash. In spite of everything, Zafira and Nasir find themselves falling into a love they can’t stand to lose . . . But time is running out, and if order is to be restored, drastic sacrifices will have to be made.

Lush and striking, hopeful and devastating, We Free the Stars is the masterful conclusion to the Sands of Arawiya duology by New York Times-bestselling author Hafsah Faizal.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown (The Brown Sisters #2)

by Talia Hibbert

Book Synopsis

Talia Hibbert returns with another charming romantic comedy about a young woman who agrees to fake date her friend after a video of him β€œrescuing” her from their office building goes viral…

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefitsβ€”someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbaeβ€”and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf’s secretly a hopeless romanticβ€”and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.

Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?

Or so everyone believes.

The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her… for a price. Love isn’t meant to be part of the bargain.

Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

One Italian Summer | reread

by Rebecca Serle

Book Synopsis

The New York Times bestselling author of the β€œheartwarming, heartbreaking, and hard to put down” (Laurie Frankel, New York Times bestselling author) modern classic In Five Years returns with a moving and unforgettable exploration of the powerful bond between mother and daughter set on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast.
When Katy’s mother dies, she is left reeling. Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mom, but her best friend and first phone call. She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone. To make matters worse, their planned mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: to Positano, the magical town where Carol spent the summer right before she met Katy’s father. Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone.
But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother’s spirit. Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life.
And then Carol appearsβ€”in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old. Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or howβ€”all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back. Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her. She is not exactly who Katy imagined she might be, however, and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue.
Rebecca Serle’s next great love story is here, and this time it’s between a mother and a daughter. With her signature β€œheartbreaking, redemptive, and authentic” (Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author) prose, Serle has crafted a transcendent novel about how we move on after loss, and how the people we love never truly leave us.

Books That Got a 3-Star Rating

Pride

by Ibi Zoboi

Book Synopsis

Pride and Prejudice gets remixed in this smart, funny, gorgeous retelling of the classic, starring all characters of color, from Ibi Zoboi, National Book Award finalist and author of American Street.

Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.

When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.

But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.

In a timely update of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, critically acclaimed author Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic.

The Honey-Don’t List

by Christina Lauren

Book Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author behind the “joyful, warm, touching” (Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author) The Unhoneymooners comes a delightfully charming love story about what happens when two assistants tasked with keeping a rocky relationship from explosion start to feel sparks of their own.

Carey Duncan has worked for home remodeling and design gurus Melissa and Rusty Tripp for nearly a decade. A country girl at heart, Carey started in their first store at sixteen, and–more than anyone would suspect–has helped them build an empire. With a new show and a book about to launch, the Tripps are on the verge of superstardom. There’s only one problem: America’s favorite couple can’t stand each other.

James McCann, MIT graduate and engineering genius, was originally hired as a structural engineer, but the job isn’t all he thought it’d be. The last straw? Both he and Carey must go on book tour with the Tripps and keep the wheels from falling off the proverbial bus.

Unfortunately, neither of them is in any position to quit. Carey needs health insurance, and James has been promised the role of a lifetime if he can just keep the couple on track for a few more weeks. While road-tripping with the Tripps up the West Coast, Carey and James vow to work together to keep their bosses’ secrets hidden, and their own jobs secure. But if they stop playing along–and start playing for keeps–they may have the chance to build something beautiful together…

From the “hilariously zany and heartfelt” (Booklist) Christina Lauren comes a romantic comedy that proves if it’s broke, you might as well fix it.

Finlay Donovan is Killing It (Finlay Donovan #1)

by Elle Cosimono

Book Synopsis

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.

When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moment, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano.

As you all know very well, I'm not the type of person to purchase books unless I've read them first (my exception being sequels to books I own or authors who never let me down) πŸ™ˆ That being said, I'm pretty picky about which books I DO spend my money on πŸ’³

I recently did a bit of a haul on #IndependentBookstoreDay to get my hands on some of my favorite books from the past year and I can't wait to have them in my hands soon! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ Below is the list of titles I ordered from my favorite indie shops:
πŸ› The Atlas Six
πŸ‘» Gallant
✨ The Kindred
πŸ“± The Boyfriend Project
πŸ’› Life's Too Short
🎈 All Fired Up (pre-order, since I loved the arc)

Okay, SO, this book isn't actually out in the world yet πŸ™ˆ BUT since I haven't seen too much about it on bookstagram, I figured it's my job to help screech about how fantastic it is! πŸ“’
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
While the gorgeous cover was certainly what drew me in (this has now landed in my top 3 fave covers of all time 😍), the story was absolutely BRILLIANT and I think everyone needs to add it to their July TBR! πŸ“š You're definitely going to want to get your hands on this masterpiece 🀍

Did you know that May is Mental Health Month? πŸ’š As someone who has battled with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder for a great deal of my life, well written mental health rep in books is so important to me! πŸ“– It's always so encouraging to pick up a novel and feel truly seen while turning the pages πŸ‘€
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
A few books that have really stood out to me because of their mental health rep are:
β€’ The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (this book quite literally changed my life and it's still one that I turn to whenever I'm struggling)
β€’ The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab
β€’ A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown
β€’ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman (this is another comfort book for me because I've never found another character quite as much like me as Nina)
β€’ Amelia Unabridged by Ashley Schumacher
β€’ Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
β€’ The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow
β€’ This Might Get Awkward by Kara McDowell (this author knows how to write about anxiety in a way that's more relatable than I've seen in nearly any other book)
β€’ It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini (this book got me through high school - in more ways than one)
