It’s here! The first snow of the winter for RVA, and it waited until the beginning of 2017 to make an appearance. On Friday night, Brandon and I walked out of the movie theatre to the most beautiful flurries cascading around us. B has lived in Florida his whole life, and while he may have seen snow once while visiting New Jersey, he’s never truly experienced winter and the snowglobe effect it can have on our city. I persuaded him to pack a few things and get snowed in with me, so at four in the morning on Saturday, we both woke with a start to see that the world outside was covered in white! I think it took everything in both of us to get back to sleep again! By the time we truly got moving, we could barely see our cars in the driveway, and we laughed as squirrels dove into the fluffy snow below our window. I decided that a day like this would be the perfect opportunity for my first vlog on my YouTube channel. We had the most magical afternoon, so I hope you enjoy the snow day vicariously through my video!
When I was younger, we had plenty of wintery traditions, and the first snow day of each year held some special memories for me. After playing rigorously outside with one or both of my parents – and sometimes dragging my older sister out there too – I would come inside with my nose red and running, my cheeks flushed from the cold, and my fingers frozen numb from snowball fights and creating a snowman. My mom would sit me down in front of the fireplace with a warm mug of her famous spiced mocha (recipe here), and we would pop in the recorded VHS tape of the movie “Snowden on Ice” which none of my friends ever even knew about, but I loved dearly (also, I just got way too excited when I found out that they have the entire movie on YouTube and I’m watching it as I type)! I have so many fond memories of my childhood snow days.
One of my struggles now is that it can be a challenge to maintain any sort of fashion sense whatsoever when the snow starts falling. I’ve always tended to throw style aside for the sake of warmth and comfort, which is a rarity, but recently I’ve discovered that many brands are bringing modern twists to their winter-wear, allowing us fashionistas to feel cute and put together in the snow, rather than like giant marshmallows. I’ve rounded up some of my very favorite, stylish snowday pieces, from the beginning layers of bodysuits and leggings, to the coziest sweatshirts (without hoods) and fluffiest coats, to the finishing touches of scarves, hats, and gloves! All of these products are under $200, and some of them are even as inexpensive as $8! You can thank me later 😉 What are some of your favorite snow day traditions?
