Pastel Princess: Buttons and Ruffles

They told me I could be anything, so I became a pastel princess.  I have to admit I had a good laugh the other day when I took a look at my closet.  You see, I have a small wardrobe rack that I like to fill with pastel colors for spring – primarily white and pink – whenever I acquire new clothing in those colors.  For a couple of months, there were just a handful of pieces on the rack, and now it’s practically overflowing because those seem to be the only colors I’m buying lately!  I just can’t seem to get enough of them.  Even more than that, I seem to be reaching for lots of the same, feminine styles – ruffles first, and then buttons!  I took my love of all these springtime trends and put together this flirty outfit!

Whenever I purchase pieces from Forever 21, there’s a chance they’ll sell out before I even get the chance to post them on the blog.  I was about ready to have a party when I found out that the key items in this outfit that I ordered were still in stock!  Pop that champagne, ya’ll! As much as I love ruffles, I’m mostly seeing them grace the OTS tops and dresses, and not much else.  While I’ve recently discovered my first OTS piece that I’m crazy about (you can read more about that experience here), I’m still not 100% sold on the OTS trend all the way around.  So when I saw this adorable ruffled top at F21, I couldn’t resist it!  The neckline is an almost opaque mesh texture, flowing into a circle ruffle around the shoulders and upper arms.  The length is perfect for tucking into a skirt or pants, and somewhat mimics a bodysuit (but works better for long torso’d gals like myself).  It’s lightweight, super flattering, and currently available in all sizes online!

In that same order, I also received this casual corduroy mini in blush pink!  Skirts are quite the challenge for me to find, because when they fit my waist, they’re too short or too tight on the booty, and if they’re long enough or loose enough on the booty, they’re falling off my waist.  #STRUGGLES.  So it was risky business ordering a skirt (especially a mini skirt) online.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that this skirt fit brilliantly.  I’ve found that button-front skirts are the way to go (I’ve styled my favorite denim one how many times now?) so this one is an absolute winner.  It’s also available in an array of other pastels: olive, khaki, cream, and blue!

If you haven’t already noticed, I’m not the biggest accessory person.  I’ll usually reach for a pair of statement sunnies or a classic watch over a large necklace or stack of bracelets.  Typically I let my clothing speak for itself, rather than layering on the jewels, but I’m never opposed to a good pair of shoes!  These mules have been on repeat lately, and everyone on Instagram has been going nuts over them.  That has a lot to do with the price tag: only $13.50! While this exact pair is nearly sold out (only a size 9 is left in stock), the same brand has another pair that’s practically identical – with the addition of a subtle bow on top – and for the same price!  Get them before they’re gone!

So here’s your trend alert: ruffles and buttons.  You need them and you need them in abundance – especially if they come in pretty pastels!  How would you style these items?

  13. I love this whole outfit but I especially love the setting you took your pictures in. It is street style chic. The skirt looks amazing on you and those mules are calling my name! I totally agree with not overpaying for a trend but sometimes I have to jump on the bandwagon LOL!

  47. Dear Stephanie, our shopping seems very similar lately as I’ve stocked my closet with pastels and can’t get enough of them. Now I’m working on that tan to match them, haha, but that will have to wait. I love how you pair affordable, even cheap, items and make them look so fabulous together.   68. There’s NOTHING wrong with too many pastels!! You are definitely the pastel princess but I lalalove it!! It always makes me happy to see that we can find such great chic things in F21!! It’s so affordable which makes it even 10x better. I haven’t gone shopping in a while but I want to pick up some pastels now! I think my current wardrobe is still too dark LOL
