What a wild year 2022 has been so far πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« I've found new favorite authors, made progress on my original TBR, checked out some great backlist books, and hit some super exciting goals! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ I'm not going to *just* share my faves or least faves, but instead I'm going to share some of the fun stats from my reading year so far! 🀎
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
- Out of the 30 books I just *HAD TO* read this year, I've read 24
- Out of my numerical goal of 120 for the whole year, I've read 119
- I've rated 44 books with 4.5/5 stars (hence my struggle when someone asks for a favorite from the year so far)
- I've read 16 ARCs from 12 different publishers (this makes me want to bawl with happiness because this was such a massive goal for me when I began book blogging!)
- I've participated in 10 buddy-reads
- I've added 38 books to my shelves (either purchased by me after I read and loved a book, given as a gift, or sent by a generous author/publisher)
- I've discovered that there's a chance I *might* like romance more than fantasy now and that's totally okay!

Long story short, I joined bookstagram in 2020 because I love books and I love talking about books, but I never had a space to do that πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ After years of fashion blogging and feeling out of place because of my interests, I wound up on this side of IG and realized that it felt like home 🀎
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
I schemed up a name (something to do with coffee and books that didn't have the words "coffee" or "books" in it), took a few photos, created a profile, and went to town πŸ™ŒπŸΌ It wasn't long before I completely FELL IN LOVE with the supportive community, safe space to find new books and talk about the ones I love, and really cultivate my photography skills (which had been lying dormant for far too long) πŸ™ˆ
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Now, I'm thrilled to have connected with favorite authors, created my own hashtag (hey there #perfectespressopour β˜•οΈ), reviewed incredible books, launched my own line of merch, and made tons of new friends 🫢🏼 When I begin to feel down about the numbers or the lack of inspiration, I remind myself of why I started in the first place and I find myself falling in love all over again πŸ₯Ή

Lately, I've been feeling a bit disappointed with fantasy (which has always been my favorite genre) πŸ˜• It seems like each time I pick one up, I'm either completely uninterested in the story or it just falls flat - but The Wonderland Trials absolutely blew me away! 🀯 If you're looking for something that really stands out amongst the rest, you certainly need to pick this one up! 🫢🏼

In my world, every month is #pridemonth and I always, always have queer books on my TBR (not just white mlm, but a wide range of lgbtqia+ stories) πŸ™ŒπŸΌ It's important to me to constantly be diversifying my shelves, learning more about the people around me, and continuing to create a safe environment for everyone in my little corner of the web 🀎
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
My goal for June was to pack my TBR with as many queer books as I could in CELEBRATION of Pride Month, so I've already read 4 books with lgbtq rep:
πŸ¦‰ Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin
🌎 The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco
πŸ“Ί The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun
🌌 Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefluer
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

🩸 Blood Like Magic by Liselle Sambury
πŸ–Œ Portrait of a Thief by Grace D Li
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

One Short Day in the Emerald City: A Top For Warmer Winter Days

One Short Day in the Emerald City: A Top For Warmer Winter Days // She Saw Style

Any of you who have been reading for quite some time and have come to know me well through my blog most likely figured out that my title truly has little to do with the color of my top and more to do with my obsession with the theatre. Β Think “Ms. Darbus” in High School Musical – that’s how much I loved theatreΒ when I was in school. Β I still have such a fondness towards the arts, primarily theatre, since I grew up with it and know so much about it. Β While I may not be up-to-date on the latest and greatest (I still haven’t listened to theΒ Hamilton soundtrack all the way through – don’t hate me), I will never grow tired of my favorite show:Β Wicked. Β I could listen to that score twenty times a day, every day of the year, and I would never cease adoring it. Β One of my favorite songs from the show is “One Short Day (In the Emerald City)” and it was instantly what I thought about when I put on this emerald-green top.

Now that I’ve scared off half my readers with my theatrical mumbo-jumbo and total nerding out, let’s get on to the outfit. Β Winter has been bizarre this year, with the temperatures coasting along at about 45-60Β°F during the day. Β On the afternoon when I shot this look, the wind may have nearly lifted the extensions right off my head, but the sun kept me and my blogger bestie mostly warm – warm enough for a short-sleeved top! Β I picked up this sheer, lace, emerald top atΒ TargetΒ (also available in a light mauve)Β the other day while browsing for transitional pieces. Β With spring coming up relatively soon, I wanted to be prepared and not caught off guard on the warmer days.

When looking for early spring clothing items, I tend to pick up pieces that can be as versatile as possible. If it can be warn either beneath a jacket or cardigan, over a short-sleeved top, and easily dressed up or down, it meets the criteria. Β With this top, I got everything I was looking for, and used itΒ to “dress up” a more casual outfit. Β I slipped on my favorite pair of skinnies, grabbed my most-loved bag, and accessorized with the cutest tassel earrings of all time. Β These black tassels are availableΒ short or long in length, and in an extensive array of colors. Β They’re handmade and of the most excellent quality fromΒ Court Perk Designs. Β The owner, Courtney, was sweet enough to give my readers a special discount code:Β tassel20 for 20% off your purchase!

This spring, I’m hoping to incorporate more texture into my wardrobe. Β I absolutely love lace, velvet, and all thingsΒ embroidered! Β I’ll also be attempting to bring more colors to my palette. Β I’ve grown so acclimated to wearing black on black on black during these winter months, that a pop of pink or blue will be quite refreshing. Β What’s on your mind for transitioning your wardrobe fromΒ winter to spring?

I was pretty impressed with Target’s spring styles this year! I did a fitting room diaries on my Insta stories, and every single thing I tried on got so much love! I felt like I needed to go back and end up buying everything I turned down this time around haha! I hear you on the chilliness of cuffing skinnies for boots. I think that’s the best part about the tights-under-pants trend that’s happening right now. I gotta get myself a pair so I can pull it off too!

OMG Wicked is my favourite musical! I watched it only twice – once in London and once on Broadway. They were both a little different, but fantastic. I had no idea you loved theatre so much, but I remember you used to dance and that is really amazing. This green top is so cute and so pretty how you styled it. My first loves in fashion are leather and lace so definitely is one I think looks great on you.

In LA, I always feel a season behind. It doesn’t really get cold until January to February to me, but I love bringing the maxi dresses and leather jackets back out. πŸ™‚

I’m so sad I never got to see it with the original cast, because Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are my two favorite Broadway vocalists, but the current cast is magical as well! I love finding fellow Wicked fans! Oooh yes, leather and lace is probably the best combo of all time – totally femme fatale! I’m looking forward to finding ways to incorporate leather into my spring wardrobe as well!

AHHHH! A fellow broadway enthusiast! Love, love, love Wicked! I must say, I think “What Is This Feeling” is my personal favorite. I mean, besides the belter, “Defying Gravity”. You really should listen through all of Hamilton, though! My mom has got me obsessed. Although, have you checked out The Book Of Mormon? It’s very rated-R, but such a great play and the music is hilarious. They have a song that kind of mocks “The Wizard and I”. It’s amazing! I should probably stop talking about broadway haha. Your top is too cute, and I’ve been totally digging the emerald green deal lately. Such a universally flattering color. Plus the little peek of your tassel earrings, too cute! (P.S. sorry for the crazy theatre blabbing… )

Oh my gosh this comment made my life. I’m so excited to have found another theatre geek such as myself! I don’t know if I will ever be able to pick a favorite song from Wicked, but I’ve auditioned with “Defying Gravity” a few times, and I will always adore “Popular” and “No Good Deed”! I’ve never seen Book of Mormon, but I’ve heard wonderful things. They came to RVA a few months back, but I missed it! I’ll have to learn more about it for the next time they’re in town!

Oh my gosh, I’m so glad I wrote more about my love for theatre in this post because now I’m finding all these other blogger babes that love it as well haha! πŸ™‚ I’m so jealous that you have the opportunity to see Broadway shows. As much as I adore the arts, I’ve still never actually seen a play on Broadway, but it’s definitely on my bucket list!

I will definitely make it a mission to see it!! Incorporating your passion for theatre in your posts is so cute! For anyone who was scared off (I hope not), they’re seriously missing out!!! Emerald is my birth stone! I absolutely love the color so seeing this top makes me happy. It makes me even happier for the lace details!! I also love how the trim is a little sheer! Pairing it with a pair of jeans is so nice because it shows how versatile the top is (dressed up and down). PS those tassel earrings?! I love creative things.

Oh gosh, so I learned about Wicked when I was about nine or ten years old, and I played the soundtrack like crazy, knew the story by heart, and watched so many clips of the original cast on YouTube. I finally got to see it in person about three years ago and it was the most magical experience – and that wasn’t even seeing it on Broadway – I can only imagine what that would be like! I hope you get to see it one day! Thank you so much for being so supportive of how I shared my deep love for theatre! Ahh you should do an entire post wearing emerald for your birthday haha! It’s an acquired taste, I’ll give it that, but once you find a show that you love, it’s hard to stop listening to the soundtracks and enjoying learning about the cast. I grew up in a very musically-inclined family, and my mom loved classic musical movies, so I was raised with it, and then I did musical theatre for 6 years, so now it’s engrained into my very being haha!

Why am I totally not surprised that you love the arts as much as I do? I have never had the opportunity to go to the opera, but if I ever get the chance to visit Europe, I plan to make that a requirement for myself! There are so many outlets for artistic people such as us, and I love that. I also love that blogging is one of those outlets, and that I get to find so many other like-minded individuals to share my love with – like you! ❀️

Wicked is a show I’ve been dying to see for the longest time but never had an opportunity to go yet. I’ve heard such AMAZING things and I’m so jealous.

That would be so fun. I can do one wearing purple for amethyst! πŸ™‚

You would fit in so well in the Emerald City and I really love how you styled everything in this look! It’s effortless and cute, but perfect for the weather!

I don't read much dark academia, so recommend some titles to me (THAT AREN'T AS WELL KNOWN) that you've enjoyed! πŸ›

I definitely do! 🫢🏼 In the past few years, I've read more and more books like this and they always leave me feeling utterly fascinated (and maybe a little confused?) πŸ€” I gotta say that writing reviews for them can be a bit tough, but reading them is a lot of fun πŸ™ˆ

Books I enjoy that are no plot, just vibes:
🐝 The Starless Sea
πŸŽͺ The Night Circus
πŸ’ƒπŸ» Where Dreams Descend
πŸͺΆ The Raven Cycle
πŸšͺ The Ten Thousand Doors of January
πŸ§™πŸ»β€β™€οΈ The Once and Future Witches

I definitely do! πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ One of the most pleasant surprises when I opened up GALLANT was seeing the hauntingly beautiful pieces of art inside πŸ–€ It made the story feel more alive and helped me understand the way the character's mind worked 🧠

There was a similar feeling when I first read THE ATLAS SIX and saw the character art 🎨 It gave the cast so much more depth and it made me wish that more books included pieces like this πŸ“–

Other additions that make books stand out to me:
πŸ“° Unique chapter breaks (I read a basketball book that was divided into 4 quarters, and a book about an actor divided into acts, things like that)
πŸ’¬ Text messages
πŸ—Ί Maps
✍🏼 Handwriting (especially in the form of letters or lists)
